Common Beginner Problems and What to Expect When Learning Guitar Chords

by IanM on October 7, 2011

In this video I talk about some of the common problems faced by beginners when they start learning how to play guitar chords. I feel its important that you know what to expect so you don’t start freaking out and give up just as you’re starting out. Giving up is BAD ~ nuff said.

Hi amal, I’m sorry I’m not sure exactly what you mean. If you’re looking to lean chords, I have a chords reference list on the right sidebar of my website which will teach you all the chords I normally use in my tutorials. :)

I’ve learned how to play few songs with power chords in the past, but was recently gifted a classical guitar. I want to learn the to play the “right” way and your videos are great! Thanks for doing this!

I’m so glad I found your website and YT channel! I gave up the guitar for a few months because I had lost my motivation to learn, but it’s come back now and you’re helping me ouch it further! So, thanks! ^_^

I love the way of your teaching guitar. It’s very easy to learn especially for me who is beginner in playing guitar. But why you need to hide your face? Can you please show your face to us? Super like your version of Someone like you.

one of my friends gave me a guitar and i really wanna learn playing guitar but i have no time to go to conservatoiry and i jast wanna ask if i can learn it online just by myself

IanM November 13, 2014 at 10:06 pm

Hi Maissa, yes it is possible to learn online on your own. It’s always helpful to find a friend or teacher who can show you the basics like pressing strings and strumming, but once you have the basics it’s very easy to start picking up things on your own.

Hey I really need help with your “I’m yours” tutorial by Jason mraz. I don’t understand how many strings I’m supposed to hit when using the down down up strumming pattern… and how many times do I use down down up for each chord before moving onto the next one? If you could help I’d really appreciate it :)

Thanks for the tutorial videos, my grandfather has many guitars and is planning on leaving them with me when he passes on so I’m trying to learn the guitar so I can use the guitars he will give me.
